Before chasing a tech job, understand the landscape — the roles, how hiring works, and where you fit. A clear picture helps you target your effort instead of applying randomly and hoping. Let's map the tech job landscape.
The main tech roles
Tech has many roles beyond "programmer" — a sample:
- SOFTWARE ENGINEER / DEVELOPER (frontend, backend, full-stack, mobile)
- DATA (data analyst, data scientist, data engineer)
- DEVOPS / CLOUD / SITE RELIABILITY
- QA / TEST ENGINEER
- UI/UX DESIGNER, PRODUCT DESIGNER

Not all tech jobs require heavy coding. There's a role for many skill
sets — find where YOUR skills + interests fit.
Tech is far broader than "programmer". There are software engineers (frontend, backend, full-stack, mobile), data roles (analyst, scientist, engineer), DevOps/cloud, QA/testing, UI/UX and product design, product management, cybersecurity, IT support/sysadmin, plus technical writers, developer advocates, and more. Not all tech jobs require heavy coding — there's a role for many skill sets. Knowing the range of roles helps you find where your skills and interests fit — instead of assuming tech means "learn to code" or forcing yourself into the wrong role. Explore the landscape, and target the role that suits you.
How tech hiring works
The typical hiring pipeline:
1. APPLICATION (CV + often a cover letter / online form)
2. SCREENING (a recruiter/system filters CVs; ATS software may scan first)
3. INITIAL INTERVIEW (recruiter or hiring manager — a screen)
4. TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT (coding test, take-home, or technical interview)
5. FURTHER INTERVIEWS (technical + behavioural rounds)
6. OFFER + NEGOTIATION
Each stage is a FILTER. Your goal: pass each one. This course prepares

- Your SKILLS: what can you do (or learn)? (coding, design, data, etc.)
- Your INTERESTS: what do you enjoy? (building, analyzing, designing,
organizing)
- Your BACKGROUND: what transfers? (many skills cross over into tech)
- The MARKET: which roles are in demand + accessible to you?
You don't need to know EVERYTHING — pick a TARGET role (next lesson) and
build toward it. Focus beats scattering yourself across every possible
job.

Not understanding the hiring pipeline (surprised by each stage). And trying to be everything (unfocused).
