Lesson 6 of 13
Building products & offers
The highest-value, most-owned way to monetise is to sell your own products and offers — things you create and own, where you keep most of the money and control the relationship. Unlike ads or sponsors, your products let you turn your expertise and audience into a real business. This lesson covers building products and offers. Let's create things to sell. Let's build your own offers.
The types of creator products
YOUR OWN PRODUCTS/OFFERS = things YOU create + sell to your audience. Highest margin,
most control, + you OWN the customer relationship (not rented from a platform/brand).
THE MAIN TYPES:
- DIGITAL PRODUCTS (the creator sweet spot) — make once, sell infinitely, ~zero
marginal cost, high margin, scalable:
- COURSES / educational content (teach what you know — often the biggest earner
for expertise niches).
- EBOOKS / guides / templates / presets / Lightroom presets / Notion templates /
printables / digital art / stock assets / plugins.
- SERVICES (fastest to start, trades time for money) — freelancing, consulting,
COACHING, done-for-you work, speaking. High value, low/no upfront build; limited
by your time.
- MEMBERSHIPS / SUBSCRIPTIONS (recurring — covered separately) — a productised
community/content.
- PHYSICAL PRODUCTS / MERCH — branded merch (print-on-demand = low risk) or real
products. Lower margin + logistics, but a fan favourite + brand-building.
- SOFTWARE / APPS / TOOLS — if you can build/commission them (higher effort, high
potential).
WHY BUILD YOUR OWN:
- HIGHEST MARGIN + you keep the money (no big platform/brand cut).
- YOU OWN IT — the product, the customer, the relationship. Not dependent on
algorithms/sponsors. The most durable income.
- LEVERAGE YOUR EXPERTISE + AUDIENCE — you already have both; a product monetises
them directly + deeply.
Your own products/offers are things you create and sell to your audience — the highest margin, most control, and you own the customer relationship (not rented from a platform/brand). The main types: digital products (the creator sweet spot — make once, sell infinitely, ~zero marginal cost, high margin, scalable): courses/educational content (teach what you know — often the biggest earner for expertise niches) and ebooks/guides/templates/presets (Lightroom presets, Notion templates, printables, digital art, stock assets, plugins). Services (fastest to start, trades time for money): freelancing, consulting, coaching, done-for-you work, speaking (high value, low/no upfront build, but limited by your time). Memberships/subscriptions (recurring — covered separately — a productised community/content). Physical products/merch (branded merch — print-on-demand = low risk — or real products; lower margin and logistics, but a fan favourite and brand-building). And software/apps/tools (if you can build/commission them — higher effort, high potential). Why build your own: highest margin (you keep the money — no big platform/brand cut), you own it (the product, the customer, the relationship — not dependent on algorithms/sponsors — the most durable income), and leverage your expertise + audience (you already have both, so a product monetises them directly and deeply). Your own product is where a content following becomes a business.
Building a product that sells
HOW TO BUILD A PRODUCT PEOPLE ACTUALLY BUY:
- SOLVE A REAL PROBLEM / SERVE A REAL DESIRE — the best products solve YOUR audience's
specific problem or give them something they clearly WANT (from their questions,
struggles, requests). Product-audience fit beats a "cool idea".
- LISTEN TO YOUR AUDIENCE — they tell you what they need (comments, DMs, polls,
"I wish there was..."). VALIDATE demand before building big (pre-sell, gauge
interest, start small). Don't build in a vacuum.
- START WITH YOUR EXPERTISE + WHAT FITS YOUR NICHE — teach/sell what you know + what
your audience follows you for. A fitness creator -> a program; a design creator ->
templates/presets; an expert -> a course/coaching.
- START SIMPLE / MVP — a small first product (a guide, a template, a mini-course, a
coaching offer) beats an endless "perfect" product. Ship, learn, improve. Validate,
then expand.
- DELIVER REAL VALUE + QUALITY — the product must be genuinely good (it reflects on
your brand; refunds + reputation ride on it). Over-deliver on value.
- BUILD A VALUE LADDER — offer a range: free content -> cheap product -> mid course/
membership -> premium (coaching/high-ticket). Different fans buy at different
levels; each step builds trust toward the next.
- USE THE RIGHT TOOLS/PLATFORMS — Gumroad/Payhip (digital), Teachable/Kajabi/Podia
(courses), Shopify/print-on-demand (merch), your own site. Easy to set up + sell.
THE PRINCIPLE: build your OWN products (digital/services/merch) that solve your
audience's real problems, starting simple + validated, delivered with real value.
It's the highest-margin, most-owned income — turning your expertise + audience into
a business.

Deliver real value + quality — the product must be genuinely good (it reflects on your brand; refunds and reputation ride on it — over-deliver). Build a value ladder — offer a range (free content → cheap product → mid course/membership → premium coaching/high-ticket), because different fans buy at different levels and each step builds trust toward the next. And use the right tools/platforms — Gumroad/Payhip (digital), Teachable/Kajabi/Podia (courses), Shopify/print-on-demand (merch), or your own site (easy to set up and sell). The mistake beginners make
The first mistake is building a product no one wants — creating in a vacuum (a "cool idea" with no validated demand), then no one buys; listen to your audience and validate demand first (product-audience fit). The second mistake is over-building / waiting for perfect — spending months on an elaborate first product instead of a simple MVP; start simple, ship, learn, and expand. The third mistake is low quality / over-promising — a thin, poor product that disappoints (refunds, lost trust, bad reputation); deliver real value and quality (over-deliver). And no value ladder / mispriced — one offer with no range, or pricing wrong; build a ladder (free → cheap → premium). And relying only on rented streams — ignoring the highest-margin, owned income; build your own product. Validate demand first, start simple, deliver quality, build a value ladder, and prioritise owned products.
Your turn
Your turn
- Find the problem: from your audience's questions, struggles, and requests, identify a specific problem you could solve (or a thing they clearly want) with a product — product-audience fit over a 'cool idea'.
- Pick a product type: choose what fits your niche and expertise (a course/guide/template/preset for digital, coaching/consulting for services, merch for fans) and start with your strength.
- Validate before building big: gauge demand (ask your audience, poll, or pre-sell) and start with a simple MVP (a guide, mini-course, or coaching offer) rather than an elaborate 'perfect' product.
- Deliver real value: make the product genuinely good/over-deliver (it reflects on your brand), and set it up on the right platform (Gumroad/Payhip, Teachable/Podia, Shopify/print-on-demand, or your site).
- Build a value ladder: sketch a range of offers (free content -> cheap product -> mid course/membership -> premium coaching) so different fans can buy at different levels and each step builds trust toward the next.
